How to develop an exercise routine and stick to it
We all know regular exercise has so many wonderful benefits, yet 85% of people do not meet the current physical activity guidelines. Why then is it so challenging to stick to a regular exercise routine? Incorporating exercise into our lives can be challenging for so many people and largely depends on your own individual circumstances.
See below our top tips for getting into an exercise routine:
1. Set Goals:
Setting goals around your exercise regime can help to enhance motivation. Ensuring these goals follow the SMART principle (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely) will help to hold you accountable and give you a sense of working towards something. Make sure to write these goals down and reflect on them often.
2. Plan out your week
Begin your week by planning out how and when you are going to fit your exercise in. Have this plan written out somewhere you will see frequently as a reminder.
3. Find a type of exercise you enjoy
You are more likely to stick to a form of exercise you enjoy. Trial a few different types to see what works best for you. This can be anything such as yoga, Pilates, dancing, swimming, gym classes or walking.
4. Start Small
We are far more likely to stick to something when it fits easily into our lives so don’t try to change too much too soon. Instead start with exercising 1-2 x weekly or for 5-10 minutes every few days. Once you have developed this routine gradually begin to increase the frequency.
5. Seek advice from a professional
If you still feel you are struggling, book an appointment with an accredited exercise physiologist. They can sit down and identify the best types of exercise for you and your body as well as help you to develop self-management skills.
